Early Life and Career
On July 21, 1899, Ernest Miller Hemingway in Oakpark, Illinois to Clarence and Grace Hemingway. In his first years of life, his mother dressed him as a girl, which was common in the time period he was raised. For the most part, he grew up in a conservative suburban area. When he and his father could escape to Northern Michigan, where the family had a cabin, he was allowed to dress and behave as the young boy he really was. With his father, this is where he learned to hunt, fish, and appreciated the outdoors.
He worked for his high school news paper, the Trapeze and Tabula, and wrote about sports. Following his graduation, he worked for the Kansas City Star, where he learned to write in short declaritive sentences. This will later influence his distinctively stripped prose style, which he became famous for.
